The Gildea Family trekked Kilimanjaro’s Umbwe Route with Thomson Safaris in January 2013. The family members recall what made this trip a special experience:
“We are all proud of one another for our accomplishments. All of the guides and porters were extremely supportive and very well skilled. I owe a great deal to my guide, Sunday, for his enormous positive support of me getting to the top! We had an unbelievable experience with Thomson! We will never stop talking about our trip of a lifetime or singing Thomson Safaris praises!” – Lois G.
“An awesome experience! I loved every day because there was always something challenging. The guides and porters were very nice and helped with anything and everything. It was awesome getting to know them. The summit day was the hardest physical and mental thing I’ve ever done and I am a collegiate rugby player.” - Robert G.
“This was an experience I will never forget. I am so happy to have had the staff we had because they became like family to us. There was trust and comfort with every guide and most porters that we became close with. I’m happy my family chose Thomson!” - Kathleen G.
Private Family Kilimanjaro Umbwe Trek, January 2013
I am very thankful that all the arrangements for my three different journeys in Tanzania worked out without a hitch!
On Kilimanjaro: I miss the team of porters, their cheerfulness, friendliness, and hard work. They always cheered me when I arrived at each camp, about half an hour or so after everyone, calling out “Jambo Bi Bi” (Bi Bi means grandma, an endearing term).
On Safari: All of the Nyumbas were luxurious and had bright lights. Gibbs Farm was totally unexpected – felt so relaxed in luxury after the Kilimanjaro trek and Tarangire drives. The Eastern Serengeti Nature Reserve was a most appropriate place to end the safari. So peaceful.
Zanzibar was a most appropriate place to end the safari. A therapeutic visit.
Thomson Safaris has done a great job.

Kevin climbed Kilimanjaro’s Grand Traverse Trek with Thomson Safaris in February 2013
Thomson Safaris had the trek very well prepared. The trek was great and I was very impressed with the guides, Edward and Simon. Daniel and William, the waiters, were terrific. The porters, cooks, etc. all were very nice and very helpful. LOVED the Arusha Coffee House at end of journey.
Thanks for your help; I have already recommended Thomson Safaris to friends.
Kilimanjaro Grand Traverse, February 2013
I had an absolutely incredible time! After doing my research and reading all the reviews for Thomson Safaris, I went in with high expectations, and they were exceeded!
The guides and crew provided tremendous service and relentless attention to detail. Everyone from the head guide to the porters made it their business to pay attention to the small things which not only makes for a good trip, but can make a difference between success and failure. The gear, medical equipment and logistics in getting us to the summit safely was a first class operation. Also, as a solo traveler, safety was my top priority. I was well cared for and I felt very comfortable and safe throughout my entire trip.
It was very helpful reading the testimonials of your clients when I was doing my research before the trip. Thank you so much for providing such an outstanding service from start to finish!
Kilimanjaro Western Approach & Safari Extension, February 2013
The trip was amazing and very rewarding! I really enjoyed the experience, and I would absolutely recommend Thomson Safaris to my friends in the future. You guys did a perfect job and I have no complaints.
In particular, I wanted to recognize one of our assistant guides James, who I felt did a particularly superb job. I thought he was extremely helpful on the climb, knowledgeable about the mountain and its wildlife, and he just had a great attitude. That being said, the other guides (Honesto and Renatus) were very good too.

What a team. Consummate professionals. I did extensive research and I was not let down. I liked the 9-day option and the day light summit attempt.
Thomson has excellent credibility and reputation among the industry. I came across some other outfits on the mountain that I thanked the Lord I was not climbing with. No question I would tell anyone looking for the right trekking company, you are the only way to go.
If you want to climb Kilimanjaro and enjoy doing it, call Thomson. I booked the trip after extensive internet research and went through your website. Why anyone would book the trek based on a cheaper price astounds me.
