Jambo Blair,

Most of our lives my wife and I wanted to step out onto the Serengeti and absorb the greatest diversity of wildlife found anywhere on earth. We also wanted to experience the local culture. This was accomplished well beyond our expectations.

We studied the materials over and over again and decided that the Thomson's Signature Safari was the right fit for us because of the number of safari days, the great cost and the three conservation areas to be visited; Tarangire National Park, wow, the large elephant populations, the Ngorongoro Highland/Crater; impressive old collapsed volcano with all the species of Noah's Arch minus the giraffes. And of course the 6 days out in the vast wide open Serengeti where thousands and thousands of wildebeest and zebras roam with great numbers of predators lurking in the shadows.

We went on our safari in February 2012, due mainly to the super weather conditions predicted and the birthing period for the wildebeest and other prey. Lots of food to go around for the predators and the animals with full bellies ignore the land rovers a little better.

I'm certain that you can't go wrong on any package, as Thomson runs a top notch operation with great guides. As a former ranger who would have loved to cross the Serengeti on foot, but know that it wouldn't be safe, we decided to do the next best thing, jump in a Land Rover. I was very surprised how knowledgeable the guides were. I'm an avid birder and I followed up on the guides using various bird references and they were right on their description 99% of the time.

My wife and I did want to spend as much time on the Serengeti as possible. The Thomson's Signature Safari more than pacified our expectations.

So good luck and enjoy the once in a life time experience.

I'm working with my husband to figure out how we can accomplish a safari so I am really happy to "hear" your review. When did you go and which package did you choose? Or, did you design your own?
